Centuries ago a man would gain a woman’s favor by winning a tournament or bringing down a ferocious lion, but Jonathan got Danielle’s attention with his boisterous presence in their bar exam class. Although she first thought he was annoying, the day he walked her to her car her annoyance turned to intrigue as they spent hours getting to know each other; their relationship continued even after the bar exam class was done and they began a romantic relationship. The day they were engaged was an accident. In order to quiet her snarky comments about the future of their relationship, he scraped his plans for a romantic proposal and gave her the ring he’d purchased months earlier. Although it wasn’t exactly what he’d planned, Danielle said, “It was a very personal moment that I would not have wanted to have in front of an audience.” For their photo shoot at Whiskey in Downtown Durham, they wanted a dramatic photo shoot reminiscent of the style found in the popular soap opera, Dynasty. The couple collaborated with Vesic Photography for their romantic and fun engagement session, which artfully captured the couples love for each other.
How They Met
Jonathan and I first met while studying for the bar exam. When I first walked into the room, Jonathan noticed me immediately. After a few hours in class, I noticed him because he was very loud and talkative (not to mention very tall). I thought he was obnoxious, but I later learned that he was talking so much because he wanted me to notice him. At some point during bar study, we both were leaving the building at the same time and he walked me to my car. We ended up standing in the parking lot talking for hours about our upbringing, families, sorority and fraternity, and our career aspirations. On that night, we both realized that we had found “the one.”
The Proposal
I messed up the proposal. Jonathan purchased an engagement ring, which he had been keeping in the file cabinet at his apartment for several months. He planned to propose on Christmas Eve in front of my friends and family. After leaving a Christmas party in early December where I had found out another friend had recently gotten engaged, I made a snarky comment to the effect that I would probably never get married. I also questioned whether marriage had even crossed his mind. Apparently, he had all he could take. He left my house to go get the ring. I did not know where he was going, I just assumed he wanted to go blow off some steam. When he came back, I started to apologize and he handed me a box and told me to open it. I was really confused (and scared), so I did not open it. He opened it for me and there the ring was. He got on one knee and asked me to marry him–his voice was trembling. I was completely shocked. I could not believe he had the ring for months and was able to keep it from me! While my pushiness ruined the proposal he had planned, I would not have it any other way
The Engagement Session
Jonathan and I love this bar in Downtown Durham called Whiskey; it has the most amazing vibe and decor, so we decided to have the engagement session there. Jonathan wanted to wear a white dinner jacket at the wedding and I told him that I would prefer he wear a black tuxedo at the wedding, so we decided he would wear a white dinner jacket at the engagement shoot. The theme was really a mix, we wanted to do a formal shoot with a Dynasty, vibe, and we wanted to take some pictures in business professional attire. Whiskey was the perfect venue and Hooman, our photographer was amazing. We did shots of us at the bar somewhere Jonathan was acting as the bartender. It was lots of fun!
Looking Forward to the Wedding
My wedding day was over. We had an intimate wedding with only our closest family and friends. It was the best day of my life and everything was perfect. We opted for an intimate wedding because we both had been in some large weddings, we felt that in some cases, the meaning, and the emotion behind the event was lost. Our wedding was about our union and us and it was truly an amazing day.
