Jay and Derrick, both teachers, are ecstatic about tying the knot in Dallas, Texas on New Year’s Eve! What a way to ring in a new year! The adorable couple took to Klyde Warren Park in Dallas for their engagement session this past winter and were cozy side by side every minute of the shoot. Find out what smooth move Derrick used to win over Jay below!
Tell us about how you met and all about the proposal!
After the Veterans Day convocation, I was waiting on my friends for lunch and this fine upperclassmen approached me. He was very polite and that caught my attention! He asked if I heard the trumpet solo? I exclaimed and told him “Yes,” and my friends kept tapping me, saying how great he sounded! He then proceeded to tell me that he was the trumpeter. My face dropped and I told him, “Oh, You did ‘ight!” After that, we exchanged numbers and we have been inseparable ever since.
I just graduated from Grambling State University so my family and Derrick’s family went out to celebrate! In the middle of eating, my family began to tell me how proud they were. Derrick was the last to speak and everyone clapped so I thought it was over. I turned around and he was on one knee with a plate that read Will you marry me?. I immediately cried tears of joy and said, “Yes!” My whole family was crying and clapping! Everyone knew the whole time.
The engagement session…
With our wedding being on New Year’s Eve, we decided to take a Winter Wonderland approach.
What did you do on your first date?
We were both broke college students so we watched the movie, “All About the Benjamins” and talked. Now we watch the movie on our anniversaries.
What’s your favorite thing to do as a couple?
We love to travel and go on vacations.
How has wedding planning been so far?
It was stressful at first because our wedding is in my hometown and we live in Alexandria, LA. But after my mother recommend Andrea Reese to us, we have been in heaven! She has really been a God sent and has connected us with some great people, including our photographer, Misha Wynn!
Tell us what you’re looking forward to most on the wedding day.
I am looking forward to my fiancé’s first reaction and consummating our marriage under God.
