Michelle and Deondre said “I do!” at their joyous early Spring wedding in Riverview, Florida!

As two introverts who met as coworkers at the same pharmacy, Michelle and Deondre took time to develop their relationship. They slowly went from polite greetings to short conversations and the occasional banter. Eventually, their discussions grew deeper and after some not-so-subtle hints from Michelle, Deondre decided to ask her out.

On July 4th, 2023, Michelle and Deondre spent the day cooking together and planned to watch fireworks together as per tradition. Unexpectedly, Deondre told Michelle he needed to go home to change his clothes. She shrugged it off and didn’t think anything of it. When Deondre returned he knocked on the door. As Michelle opened it she heard music playing and saw him holding a teddy bear. As she turned back after closing the door, Deondre was on his knee.

He said a lot of things I don’t remember in my shock, but I remember the last question, “Would you do me the honor of being my wife?” Ecstatic, I excitedly said, “Yes!” Then proceeded to burst out in tears. God has indeed been faithful to keep His promises.

How did you meet?

The miracle is two introverts overcame their nerves to strike up a conversation. We met at work when Deondre was assigned to our pharmacy. I was struck by how handsome he was, but intrigued by his work ethic and attention to detail. As we got comfortable with each other we went from polite hellos and goodbyes to awkward banter to deeper, longer conversations. As coworkers became aware of the possible connection, they did their part to help it along. And after subtle or not-so-subtle hints from me of my interest, Deondre decided to ask me out. The rest is history.

Tell us about the proposal.

We spent the day cooking together on July 4, 2023, with plans to watch the fireworks display later, as we’d done since 2019. Deondre went home to “change clothes” which was unusual because he usually brings his change of clothes with him. I shrugged it off.

About an hour later, he came back to pick me up. He rang the doorbell and as I approached the door, I heard music playing. Also not unusual, because we jam to music all the time. When I opened the door, he had a teddy bear in his hand that he handed me. I hugged him and heard him whisper, “I’m so nervous,” which made me confused because we had just spent the day together. What could he be nervous about?

I turned to close and lock the door and when I turned back around, he was down on one knee. It was then I realized the song playing was “Happily Ever After” by Case. He said a lot of things I don’t remember in my shock, but I remember the last question, “Would you do me the honor of being my wife?” Ecstatic, I excitedly said, “Yes!” Then proceeded to burst out in tears. God has indeed been faithful to keep His promises.

Wedding Style:

The wedding took place in early Spring. I wore a romantic, elegant lace dress. Deondre wore a black tux.

What is the best memory from your wedding?

There was a brief moment at the top of the steps, where I had the panoramic view of our guests, the wedding party, and the beautiful courtyard arrangement. I stood at the edge, tears flowing, thinking, “Lord, You kept Your promise. This was worth the wait.” Then, before descending the stairs, peering down to the end of the aisle, I spotted my groom as the song lyrics “The one God kept for me until it was time” played. It was a testament to our recognition of God’s kindness in establishing and faithfulness in preserving our relationship.

What is the best wedding advice you can give to engaged couples?

It is serious business to commit yourself to someone for life. Be very clear about the distinction between wedding planning and marriage preparation. Wedding planning may take months to years to complete for one amazingly memorable day that passes far too quickly. Fully embrace that entire creative process. But give higher priority to preparation for the marriage, the God-ordained, life-long covenant. Invest more time, energy, and effort in prayer, quality premarital counseling, and refining your character, than you do in choosing the colors, style, and vendors. To that end, challenge yourselves to plan a debt-free wedding. Paying cash for wedding elements as you go along ensures you stay under budget, and trust us, you will enjoy your honeymoon a lot more knowing you don’t have invoices (or interest) waiting for your return.
