It wouldn’t be until six years ago that the opportunity to get to know each other would present itself, but it would take another four years before their seed of love could fully flourish – developing into their own garden of happily ever after…

Tell us how you met and all about the proposal. For over the past 15 years we have gone to the same barber and would periodically see each other. It wasn’t until about six years ago when we were able to have in-depth conversations and establish a relationship. Although the relationship was short-lived, we rekindled that initial spark four years later.

On the six month anniversary of being back together, A.D. took Washington on a hot-air balloon ride; something Washington had always wanted to do. Afterwards, he presented a watch to Washington with the inscription “Marry me?” and the date May 6, 2017. Washington accepted his proposal without hesitation!

How did you know they were “the one”? We both experienced tremendous emotional and spiritual growth during our time apart. Once reunited, we were able to recognize that growth in each other and realized that as happy as we were individually, we were even happier together. On separate occasions, we each have stated that the embrace we had on the night of our reconnection felt so right, we knew we were meant to be together.

What was wedding shopping like for you? Shopping was fun because we both like to look our best. Therefore, we each had custom-designed complementary tuxedos from Balani to match our individual style and personality.

Did you incorporate any culture into your wedding? A.D.’s deceased grandfather was a Baptist minister; so spirituality is a big component of his culture. Thus, the ceremony being held at Washington’s church was a perfect fit. Washington is Jamaican; so reggae music was incorporated throughout the reception.

What is your best memory from your wedding? Washington: A.D. serenading me at the reception with “Overjoyed” by Stevie Wonder.
A.D.: Before we got back together, I had prayed three years straight for God to send me a helpmate; whoever he was. So my best memory was standing in a church filled with both of our families and friends, saying my vows to Washington, my helpmate!

What is the best wedding advice you can give to engaged couples? The wedding is a single day, while the marriage is a lifetime with the person you commit to on that day. Don’t let wedding planning, unsolicited or solicited input from family, friends and others prevent you from putting your spouse first.
