It was the planning of a mutual friend’s baby shower that would bring Zamyra and Adolphus together.
Over time a friendship grew and with it feelings of attraction. Upon being named the godparents of their friends’ baby, they decided it was time for that first date. The sparks flew at a charming hibachi lunch, after which they’ve remained inseparable ever after. Zamyra and Adolphus were forever pronounced husband and wife in a beautiful ballroom ceremony in Memphis that incorporated the African traditions of a tasting ceremony as well as jumping the broom. Read all about their wedding experiences below.
How did you meet? We met on Facebook while I was planning a surprise baby shower for a mutual friend. We ended up being the godparents for the child and went on our first date and have been together since then.
Tell us your proposal story. He surprised me and came in town for New Years and my parents were still in town for Christmas. After I got off work we went to the outlet mall and dinner. After dinner, he took me down to the water fountain and proposed. It was the perfect ending to our evening.
Wedding Style: Our wedding attire was formal, I wore a blush/rose-gold ballgown and Adolphus wore a Navy blue tux.
What was the wedding shopping experience like for you? I had said “yes” to the dress twice before but was never really in love with the options for plus size brides so I figured I would have to settle on something I like. After visiting Low’s I was able to find a dress totally not like anything I thought I wanted style-wise. It was perfect for me and my personality.
Wedding Party Gifts: Bridesmaids received cups, shirts, earrings, and belts for their dress. Groomsmen received a shot glass and a shot of gentleman’s jack.
Ceremony Entrance Song: “Beautiful Surprise” by India Arie (Bride’s Entrance)
First Dance Song: “Come Close” by Common
Did you incorporate any culture into your wedding? We incorporated the tasting elements ceremony and jumping the broom; both of which are African traditions.
What is the best wedding advice you can give to engaged couples? Discuss your budget upfront, decide what you want of your special day and make sure your desires come first and you are both on the same page. You only get to do this once so make it count.
