Between studying and pledging for a sorority (Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.) and a fraternity (Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.), college kept Sharissa and Aaron very busy. However, Shrarissa wasn’t too busy to notice Aaron. She would often see him at Greek functions, and she admired his quiet and reserved manner. Knowing Aaron was shy, Sharissa decided to make the first move by asking him to go out to breakfast. Their conservation was thought provoking, and their chemistry was instant!
Eventually, their young crushes blossomed into a mature and lasting relationship. After three years of dating, Aaron knew he wanted to make it official with a romantic proposal. First, he surprised Sharissa with a pair of tickets to see a Broadway show. After the show, he took her to the top of the Empire State Building overlooking the captivating New York City skyline, got down on one knee and asked a shocked Sharissa for her hand in marriage.
Wedding preparations soon began. Sharissa knew she wanted to have a vintage themed wedding, and she used her DIY talents to help pull it off. She shares, “I’ve always loved arts and crafts since I was a child, so I knew from the beginning that I wanted to be very hands on. We made and collected just about all of the décor elements used within the wedding.” The couple decided on a soft color palette of blush, mint and gold. Antique wooden and metallic picture frames, wine bottles covered in twine, crystal chandeliers, and soft pink roses mixed with white baby’s breath, all helped to enhance the vintage atmosphere of their ceremony and reception venues.
Their ceremony, which held in a vintage barn, was absolutely stunning. Everyone was dressed to the nines. The groomsmen wore vintage inspired vests in place of jackets along with newspaper boy hats, wing tipped shoes, and personalized pocket watches. Sharissa broke tradition, by allowing her bridesmaids to wear different colored dresses in shades grey, nude, and pink creating a stunning ombre effect. Aaron and Sharissa’s adorable daughter served as the flower girl, and finally there was Sharissa! She paired a vintage birdcage veil with a modern, ruffled fit and flare gown for a bridal look that was fashion forward and timeless.
After the heartfelt ceremony, guests traveled to a cozy and elegant reception venue where they obsessed over the couple’s edible wedding favors. Sharissa shares, “My family is from St. Lucia, an island in the West Indies. My sister and aunts made rum cake for our guests to take home. Also, we served a drink called “squash,” a lime juice that is served frequently on the island. We provided a few bottles for guests to take home; however, it still wasn’t enough. Guests were trying to steal bottles from each other!” It was an unforgettable day for these college sweethearts who years ago had no idea that pledging Greek would later lead to them pledging a lifetime of undying love and devotion to each other.
