Jazmine and Lorenzo showcased their love at their intimate destination wedding in Cabo through unique personal details and moving performances!

Their love story began in New York City in the summer of 2018. Jazmine, being “more theater district,” and Lorenzo being “very financial district”, the odds of them meeting casually in the bustling city were low. Luckily, after some convincing from her friends, Jazmine swiped right. Their first date was pure magic. They both knew they had found their person.

Fast forward to 2023, Lorenzo whisked Jazmine away to a surprise destination for her birthday and to ask her a very important question. Excited and a little nervous, Lorenzo did his best to hide his anticipation leading up to the big moment to not ruin the surprise. He scheduled a photo shoot, knowing Jazmine would be ecstatic to get their photos taken professionally.

[I was] so focused on his camera that when I saw the beautiful proposal set up, I thought to myself “Aww someone’s getting engaged today”. Once Lorenzo stopped walking, I realized, oh, that someone is me…

Jazmine and Lorenzo’s destination wedding in Cabo was exquisitely expressive. The theme of their wedding was the intricate, quirky, and lovely features that define their relationship, along with details and inspiration from various films, songs, and other art forms that express their love and personalities.

Featuring violin renditions of their favorite songs, moving poetry and dance, romantic quotes at each table, and more, Jazmine and Lorenzo, along with their dedicated team of vendors, ensured every detail matched their artistic vision. Every aspect of their wedding day was cultivated to showcase their relationship, interests, and pay tribute to the community that loves and supports them.

  • Couple: Jazmine & Lorenzo
  • Wedding date: June 26th, 2024
  • Wedding location: Nobu Hotel, Cabo, Mexico

Quick Facts:

  • Gifts for bridesmaids and groomsmen: Our VIPs are spread out, so we decided to send them branded gift boxes stocked with glasses, passport covers, dishes, tequila, “VIP merch”, and personal notes for the holidays to ask them to join us and get them excited for the events ahead. Men also received watches that matched their style, and the ladies received gorgeous earrings for the wedding along with matching silk pajamas and slippers.
  • Gifts for one another: Our magical wedding week in paradise (Cabo) and our unforgettable two-week honeymoon in Singapore and Mauritius. But, I couldn’t resist sending a shot of Macallan to my husband-to-be with a note before heading to the altar.
  • Ceremony entrance song: ‘A Song for You’ by Donny Hathaway ft. voiceovers by the Bride and Groom (a play on the movie Brown Sugar and When Harry Met Sally, both of which we named two of our reception tables after).
  • Recessional Song: ‘Never Too Much’ by Luther Vandross (the first note timed perfectly to our feet hitting the ground after jumping the broom, thanks to our planner).
  • First dance song: ‘Sunshine’ by JMSN (a song we fell in love with and made us feel closer during the pandemic). Friday night rehearsals for our first dance are memories we hold dearly. Especially trying to get the Patrick Swayze move from Dirty Dancing just right.

How did you meet?

Although not impossible to run into people in NYC, Lorenzo being very Financial District and Jazmine being more Theatre District, a chance meeting was highly unlikely. However, after some bullying by Jazmine’s friends and one fateful swipe, the most breathtaking first date occurred on August 18th, 2018, resulting in being inseparable since. We knew from the start.

We aimed to immerse our intimate group in the romance and quirky details that define our relationship. As symphony lovers, we selected cherished violin renditions for our guests…Throughout the day, guests discovered different love quotes from Finding Nemo to Lord of the Rings, each reflecting our journey together.

Tell us about the proposal.

Bride:

I was ecstatic for my birthday week, I had no idea where we were going. Since I attended Tony’s in lieu of a birthday dinner, I knew we would spend our first night making up for it. While getting dolled up in our room at Baha Mar, I received a call that we’d won a photoshoot. I was so excited that Lorenzo and I would finally take professional photos (also suspicious that it was a scam). Luckily, we met a Howard Dad that put me at ease, and the photos began. So focused on his camera comfort that when I saw the beautiful proposal set up, I thought to myself “Aww someone’s getting engaged today”. Once Lorenzo stopped walking, I realized, oh, that someone is me…

Groom:

On June 12th, 2023, I knew our life together would change for the better. Shortly after our arrival on a beautiful island of the Bahamas, I had to tame my excitement and anxiety because I knew it might give away the purpose of how important the start to our vacation together was. As we rounded the corner to the proposal area, I saw the stunned look on the person I would soon call my fianceé. I shared a few words … “I can’t imagine life without you…” and finally “Will you Marry Me?”. And in a swift response, no other words would leave my quick-witted woman other than “What do you think…!” With a smile across my face, I gently said to her that I’m going to need a real answer. She said yes and I became the happiest man ever!

Wedding Style

We told wedding guests that the attire was “Grandeur by the Gulf” and we meant it. We’re a couple who appreciates the classics and had no hesitation telling our guests and vendors we wanted to lean into a Black Aristocratic theme that, thanks to works like Mr. Malcolm’s List and Bridgerton, has become extremely popular. Keeping in theme, our watercolor crest could be found on the handkerchiefs passed on gold trays, accordion fans, our dance floor, and even on the serviettes the waiters used to distribute drinks. So we brought Black Bridgerton to the beach in Cabo!

What inspired your wedding look?

I knew I wanted to have my own take on the Regency movies I grew up loving, including Pride & Prejudice, which one of our reception tables was affectionately named after. Now that I had my dress and veil, I focused on my hair. As a natural bride, I wanted to wear the curls my man fell in love with on our wedding day. So I enlisted the help of my sister to do a Lizzie Bennet-inspired updo with pearls and an abundant Miss Ross the boss style for the reception.

We turned to our community for meaningful moments, starting with the ceremony opener, Ashley Victoria, Jazmine’s close friend from high school. She crafted a beautiful poem inspired by us to kick things off. To enhance her words, we hired contemporary dancers to guide us through her depictions to the beginning of our processional…

We surprised guests once more with our voiceovers, styled after interviews in When Harry Met Sally and Brown Sugar, foreshadowing some chosen table names. Each name selected from love stories on film that we’ve enjoyed and found inspirational over the years.

Lorenzo honored his long friendship with Randy Louis by choosing him as our officiant, sharing a laugh when asked “til death or zombies do us part” before I Do’s.

Culture

Before jumping the broom, we had our officiant explain the tradition and cultural significance to our guests. Even though we had our certificate before heading to Cabo, we kept saying ‘Nothing is official until we jump the broom,’ just as it was for our ancestors. We also incorporated the groom’s family heritage, being from St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Before the ceremony, guests received custom handkerchiefs to not only collect tears but ensure they were later able to wave them during the dedicated soca hour. And while this isn’t as grand, being an HBCU grad, the bride requested a swag surf for everyone and especially all Bison present.

Each element—from the ceremony voiceovers to the contemporary dancers—was a tribute to our love and the community that supports us.

What are your best memories from your wedding?

Groom: The best memory was during the procession for us both.

Seeing my future wife coming towards me was the best moment of our wedding day. I couldn’t believe I got to spend the rest of my life with my beautiful best friend. I couldn’t wait for her to hear my vows. Also, walking out to our reception as Mr. and Mrs. Providence and killing our first dance.

Bride: Walking down to the altar and seeing Lorenzo, time could have stopped.

He was standing there, tearing and smiling up at me, and suddenly it was 2018 again when I first saw him smiling at me on our first date. We were both so overcome with emotion, everything had led us here, where we always knew we would be.

Another important moment for me was the first look with my Daddy. We were so grateful for his support and faith in us and knew this day wouldn’t have been possible without him. We can be incredibly silly together, as evidenced by our Daddy/Daughter Dance complete with props tossed to us and finishing with a rap. So I wanted to share this sweet moment with him before he walked me down the aisle and I shed our last name.

Getting dressed with my mom and sister was so special. I was so elated I got to surprise them with a dance to ‘As’ by Stevie Wonder, later joined by Lorenzo and his family. They were shocked, but I wanted to put a spotlight on my girls who were instrumental in getting us to this day, from the proposal to the bridal shower.

What advice can you give to couples planning a destination wedding?

Get in the space. Standing there knowing this is where everything will happen will give you great perspective and may give you ideas you haven’t thought of. Don’t be afraid to ask. Just because something hasn’t been done before doesn’t mean you can’t make it happen!

What is the best wedding advice you can give to engaged couples?

Make it your own. Inside joke? Put it in your vows. Nerdy quote? Place it on a table. Beloved song no one will recognize? Make it your first dance. Abbott Elementary moment that cracked you up? Include that too. This day is about the love you two have for each other, so celebrate it your way!
