Although Jazzmin was wary of “internet people,” she and Olumayokun (Mayo) first met on Hinge. After a three-hour FaceTime call to get to know one another, Jazzmin agreed to meet Mayo for their first in-person date. “The rest is history,” Jazzmin says.

When it came time to propose, Mayo had two requests from Jazzmin: first, the proposal needed to be private, for just them to enjoy, and second, it needed to happen somewhere near the water. Mayo admits it was a bit challenging to pin down a private waterside location in San Diego, but with the help of his friends, family, and Jazzmin’s sister, he finally found the perfect spot: the La Jolla Gliderport, where Mayo popped the question in a field of flowers that overlooked the ocean.

After their dream proposal, the couple held their stunning nuptials at the Detroit Institute of Arts in July of 2024.

The couple enhanced their already beautiful venue with elegant décor and a chic purple ombre theme. From the flowers in the bride’s bouquet to the accents on the wedding cake, every detail of the wedding stayed true to the couple’s colorful, creative vision.

To honor Mayo’s heritage, the wedding also featured elements of Nigerian culture. The couple changed into traditional Nigerian clothing during their reception for a “spraying,” a Nigerian custom where guests throw money at the newlyweds to symbolize prosperity and joy.

How did you meet?

Jazzmin: Mayo liked my photo on Hinge on April 17th, 2022, and I waited three days to match with him. Since we met online and I was extremely skeptical of “internet people,” we first messaged through the app. Once Mayo passed all of my deal-breaker questions and proved he wasn’t a serial killer, I agreed to meet him virtually over FaceTime. Our first FaceTime call lasted about 3 hours, and I felt safe meeting Mayo in person. I think we had our first “in-person” date on Friday, April 22nd at Sabor Brazilian Grill in San Diego, and the rest is history.

Tell us about the proposal.

Mayo: I proposed at the Gliderport in La Jolla, California. I picked that spot because Jazzmin had given me two things to work with: it had to be private, and it had to be by the water. And as you can imagine, finding a private, waterfront location in San Diego isn’t exactly easy. After weeks of thinking it over and talking to friends, her sister, and my own crew, I finally found the spot.

I flew her sister Jade out to help, and my best friend Will jumped in to help set everything up. I led Jazzmin to the glider port, where there was a beautiful field of flowers overlooking the ocean. And right as I was proposing, paragliders started flying right above us. It felt so surreal. Will and the photographer I hired were there to capture everything, and honestly, it couldn’t have gone better. (Well, it would’ve been better if I didn’t forget my speech!).

Describe your wedding attire. What was the wedding shopping experience like for you?

Jazzmin: Wedding dress shopping was a dream come true! Ever since I was a little girl, I was obsessed with “Say Yes to the Dress” on TLC, and I swore if I ever got married, I would purchase my dress from THEEE Kleinfeld Bridal in Manhattan. That dream came true on June 21st, 2023. As soon as I walked in with my mom and two friends, I IMMEDIATELY spotted the owner of Kleinfeld with Randy and some new consultants in the main showroom! I tried my best to maintain my fan girl, but Randy Fenoli was kind enough to take a picture with me and my crew! Then we were sent back to our private room to try on some dresses. My consultant, Paula, was an absolute delight. She pulled all the dresses I originally sent to her, and ultimately, she actually found THE dress. I think I only ended up trying on about 8 or 9 dresses until we found the one.

I will also say, I purposely went to a smaller boutique in my current city (San Diego) before my Kleinfeld appointment just so I could get an idea of what I liked and disliked. (I’d totally recommend this to any and every bride!).

I ended up picking a dress made by designer Estee’ Couture Bridal. It was a mermaid silhouette with detachable off-the-shoulder sleeves, tulle on the bottom of the dress, and beautiful classic buttons lined down the back. Paula also picked my veil length, too! It was a cathedral-length veil with pearls gently placed all over it. It was also a beautiful and subtle homage to my sorority.

To top it off, I unknowingly scheduled my bridal appointment on my late grandmother’s birthday! She had her own way of letting me know she was there when I walked past a dressing room with her name and favorite number on it. I paired my wedding dress with blue satin jeweled Manolo Blahnik Hangisi pumps that counted as my something blue—and yes, I got the idea from Carrie Bradshaw on “Sex and the City”!

Mayo: As a bigger guy, I knew I had to go the custom suit route.

I’ve always been a huge James Bond fan, and since we were getting married in an art museum, I wanted to go with something classic and elegant—a black tux, sleek and timeless like Bond. It felt right, especially because I was wearing a white Omega Speedmaster watch, a gift from my sister and brother-in-law. The watch holds even more meaning for me because its reference number started production the year we got married—it’s a piece that connects the past, present, and future in such a special way.

But the real key to getting everything right was finding the right person who understood my body and could craft a suit that fit perfectly.

That’s why I went to Suit Supply at UTC mall in San Diego, and I’m so glad I did. Austin Malott is a true master of his craft. Not only does he have years of experience and passion for suit-making, but he also has a similar build to mine, so he knows exactly how to make a suit that fits and flatters. We went with a shawl lapel black tux with ivory buttons, paired with Givenchy patent leather shoes and some ivory-and-black Zodiac cufflinks. The whole experience was a 10/10. I can honestly say I owe my entire look to Austin Malott at Suit Supply in UTC—it was the perfect fit, inside and out.

Did you incorporate any culture into your wedding?

Jazzmin: Yes! My husband is Nigerian, and we changed into traditional attire during the dance party of our reception. I wore a custom Aso-ebi with a beautiful Gele, and he wore a matching custom Agbada, both made in Nigeria and gifted to us from my mother-in-law. When we walked into the dance area, we immediately did a “spraying,” which is a Nigerian tradition of throwing money at the newlyweds as they dance. We also jumped the broom to honor my African American roots.

What is your best memory from your dreamy summer wedding?

Jazzmin: My favorite part of the wedding was seeing my Dad for the first time. He has been very sick for the last few years, and I never thought he would live to see me get married. As soon as my Dad and I saw each other for the first time on that day, we both burst into tears. That is a memory and feeling I will never forget.

Mayo: Strolling around the city of Detroit in a vintage 1940 Detroit Packard named “Beau” with my beautiful bride. So many people stopped in the streets and cheered us on! Definitely one of the coolest moments I’ve ever experienced.
