Real {Hawaii} Destination Wedding: Jocelyn + Frederick

Jocelyn loves to plan events.  Actually, she’s an Event Planner by profession. So it goes without question that she would plan one of the most important days of her life to perfection…and she did.  Her Hawaiian destination wedding was overflowing with beauty, blooms, and the pleasure of an intimate group of close family and friends.  Her and Frederick met while working for one of the largest African-American oral history archives in the nation, and instantly clicked, opposite personalities and all.  What’s so beautiful about their union is that it truly stood the test of time.  While they were dating, Frederick had to undergo a major surgery – he needed a kidney transplant.  Fortunately, his sister was a good match and the surgery was a success.  Jocelyn stood by him through the entire recovery period, no complaints. No questions. No second-guessing…True love.  Meet the couple.

FROM THE BRIDE:

“When it came to planning the details of the wedding, we both agreed on two things: we wanted an intimate and relaxing day filled with personal touches, and we wanted to get married on October 28, 2011, which was exactly five years after we began our partnership. A destination wedding seemed like the perfect solution. After a scouting trip to Maui a year before the wedding, we both decided it was the perfect location because of its beauty, relaxing environment and incredible locals. My mother thankfully supervised the travel portion, and she couldn’t have done a more incredible job. We wanted our styles and unique sense of perspective to be reflected in all aspects of our special day. The wedding aesthetic is really an artful blend of my more artistic bohemian edge and the groom’s more understated and traditional style. Being an live event producer by trade myself, I led the charge in creating the overall design for our wedding. I selected colors of corals, salmons, peaches and soft pinks with soft green accents that reminded me of a sunset and the natural scenery in Paradise. These colors would naturally complete the scenery of Hawaii without competing against it. The overall design concept reflected an organic take on Hawaiian chic. From the invitations to the wedding reception, the wedding displayed a theme of hanging orchids that truly felt tropical, unconventional and romantic. We selected an amazing team of vendors that perfectly completed our vision. I wanted a lot of very original ideas in my wedding so a lot of items, from my headpiece, veil and bracelet to my bridesmaids dresses that were designed and sewn and invitations, were custom designed. For five days, 60 guests enjoyed wedding festivities ranging from a welcome dinner luau to tours and excursions. On the day of the wedding, we joined in union at Molokini Lookout, a secluded and intimate location with amazing panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, mountains and neighboring island Molokai. The cocktail hour and reception continued on the lanai at sunset overlooking the water at Mala Restaurant at the Marriott Wailea. Guests enjoyed five signature drinks, including a specially made “Something Blue”, named after my favorite book The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison. The guests danced into the wee hours of the night and participated in signing pieces of fabric for us to sew into a quilt following the wedding. The photographer, James Rubio, really captured the authenticity of the wedding moments in such a creative way. He truly created artwork out of our memories. The day really exceeded our wildest dreams. It honestly was the best week of our lives.

Overall some of the challenges we faced were getting everyone on board to go to Hawaii and getting the idea of a destination wedding to become a positive one. Most of my family had reservations in the beginning about us not having a local wedding in Chicago but as time passed, they began to really accept what we wanted and they were excited to Maui. We also had a huge scare when the earthquake occurred in Japan, which mildly affected Hawaii. We had a few guests pull out at that time due to fear. Lastly, even with some guests pulling out, we still exceeded our original number of guests and the capacity allowed at our original reception location. We ended up having to move the reception to another location and it couldn’t have been a better choice. We bought out the entire restaurant and had the most incredible and personalized service, which we may not have had at the other location. It was incredible!”

ON CULTURE AND TRADITION:

“The ceremony was written by both of us and was a blend of both Hawaiian and African American cultural traditions and customs, such as honoring the ancestors with a ceremony borrowed from a libation toast and jumping the broom. We selected two officiants to represent this blend- one was a Hawaiian minister whose traditional chant at the beginning of the ceremony left everyone breathless, and the other was my 83-year old grandfather who made sure to have a major knee surgery just to make it to Hawaii. We also involved our guests in the wedding ceremony by asking everyone to stand and recite vows in support of our marriage.” -Jocelyn

MOST MEMORABLE MOMENTS:

“For both of us, it was my walk down the aisle. For me, to see the look of love in the eyes of my guests and to look straight ahead and see the emotion from my best friend and know that were about to be married and to see my grandfather standing there to marry us with the Pacific ocean surrounding us and the most incredible sky, I couldn’t have asked for a better moment. One of my best friends say the Dorothy Dandridge version of “That’s All” to a harp as I walked down the aisle on my daddy’s arm. It couldn’t have been a better moment. Frederick said that seeing me in that moment brought forth every emotion possible and he couldn’t continue his happiness.” – Jocelyn

{LOVE BIRDS}

“Frederick said he loves my smile and bright personality most. My positivity, optimism, and sense of humor drew him to me because I was such a bright light in his life.”
“He has the most integrity and honesty of anyone I know. His word means so much, and I can always trust him to tell it like it is which is such a rare quality in people. That’s why he is my best friend.”
