It took two years for Jon-Michael and Shanice to formally meet after he first noticed her at a mutual friend’s party. When Jon-Michael finally saw her again he knew he could not let the opportunity of meeting Shanice pass him by. From that moment they started building their relationship and soon enough fell in love.
Read all about Shanice and Jon-Michael’s relationship as well as their classic and elegant wedding in New Jersey. Tell us how you met and all about the proposal. Jon-Michael first noticed Shanice at a friend’s party about two years before they were formally introduced. However, he was not given the chance to meet her. Two years later, when he saw her again at the same friend’s party he knew he could not let the opportunity pass him by again. Shortly after meeting, the two exchanged numbers. Jon-Michael cooked dinner for Shanice on their first date and the rest is history.
Jon-Michael proposed to Shanice on her 28th birthday (December 1, 2015). He was taking her out to dinner but decided to do it privately in their home. Shanice says she had no idea it was coming. Before they left, he asked her to sit on the edge on the bed. He handed her a birthday card, as Shanice loves greeting cards. Then, he handed her another card. Confused, Shanice opens the card to find the words “You’re engaged. (Look down.)”. Shanice looked at Jon-Michael and found him on bended knee. She literally screamed. Then of course said yes.
What was wedding shopping like for you? My wedding dress was designed by Stephen Yearick. It was classic, yet trendy. The beading and ruffles gave it glamourous feel. I seriously have never worn anything more beautiful. Wedding shopping for me was stressful. I knew the feel I was going for, but had a hard time finding it. However, when I found my dress I knew it was the one.
Did you incorporate any culture into your wedding? Jon-Michael is Jamaican so we wanted to include his culture into the wedding by having reggae classics playing in the background during cocktail hour. Our wedding favors were slices of Jamaican black cake. Our first dance song transitioned into “BAM” (Jay-Z ft. Damian Marley). With the hip-hop and reggae sounds, it doesn’t get more us than that.
Bridesmaids/Groomsmen gifts: (Bridesmaids) Personalized robes, foldable ballet flats, Alex and Ani bracelets (Groomsmen) Bow ties and personalized pocket knives
Favorite item on the menu: Lobster Mac and Cheese
First dance song: “Refuge” by John Legend
What is your best memory from your wedding? My best memory of the wedding was our cocktail hour. Because we decided to do a first look, we were able to eat and relax together during the cocktail hour. Going through our wedding pictures those are some of my favorite shots of us. You can see the happiness and relaxation in our faces.
What is the best wedding advice you can give to engaged couples? Get a day of coordinator! We did not worry about a thing because we hired our wedding day coordinator, Carla. That was one of the best wedding decisions we made. Also, have the wedding that you want. While the opinions of others is nice, have the day that feels true to the two of you and represents your love in the most authentic way.
